Magazine Cover Analysis 3
Year Produced: 2013
Magazine Title: Scream
Sub Heading: Hellraiser Revelations
Main Image: The main image for this magazine cover is split with an image of Hellraiser's Pinhead and Frankenstein. The Hellraiser image is a dull white colour which makes the headings stand out more as a whole.
The Hellraiser image may also attract some more readers into buying the magazine if they injoyed the films.
Colours:
The red / yellow elements of this magazine cover really stand out due to the dull main images. I think that the red at the top / bottom of the cover is also really effective as it suit the horror theme well.
Fonts:
I think the fonts used also suit the theme well as they just look horror based. Especially the title 'Scream' the dripping text looks good. The text on the magazine cover also goes from white to yellow which makes it even more eye-catching.
Content of The Magazine Cover:
People will be interested in the main two sub headings - Hellraiser Revelations and the curse of Frankenstein mainly. Other headings such as 'The Walking Dead' may also make some readers purchase this magazine.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this magazine cover would likely be 18-35 year olds again. People that are interested in any of the films / t.v shows featured will also come under the target audience.

Magazine Cover Analysis 2
Year Produced: 2013
Magazine Title: Scream
Sub Heading: Evil Dead (interview special)
Main Image: The main image for this magazine cover is of one of the most recognised scenes within the Evil Dead film. The background image is really dark which emphasises the headings used. The whole dark theme also links with the film and magazine style.
Colours: The colours used are also very basic on this cover. Red, white and yellow fonts are spread out evenly around the cover making it eye-catching.
The yellow has ben used mainly for little headings and the white has been used for the large 'Evil Dead' heading and the text used around the central image.
Fonts: The fonts used for this magazine cover suit the theme well. I really like the type used for the 'Evil Dead' heading as it is unique and just looks really eye-catching.
Content of The Magazine Cover: I think the main selling point of this cover would be the 'Interview Special' heading as that would be something that most readers would want to look at. The heading down the left hand side may also be interesting to some readers.
Target Audience: The target audience for this magazine would likely be 18-35 year olds once again. I think that readers that have watched the Evil Dead films would also be likely to take interest.

Sub Heading: The ultimate guide to big screen scares!
Sub Heading: The ultimate guide to big screen scares!
Main Image: The main image for this magazine cover is a mixture of cuts from specific films that relate to the sub heading. This is important as it gives you an idea of what will feature within the magazine itself. The image is also quite grungy which adds to the horror theme and makes it eye-catching as a whole. The dark colours of the background also make the headings stand out more which is also a good feature.
Colours: The colours used for this magazine are a mixture of dull / bright tones. The brighter elements are mainly used for the headings (red).
I think that this combination is effective as it makes the important elements really eye-catching which is essential for a magazine cover.
Fonts: I think that the fonts have been organised so that the more important pieces of text are represented in a larger font. The fonts used are relatively bold as a whole and use colours - red, white, black and yellow.
Content of The Magazine Cover: The cover has some good sub headings such as '8 great free gifts' 'The nastiest films ever made' this may persuade the audience to buy the magazine as people may want to find out more.
Target Audience: I think that the target audience for this magazine would likely be 18-35 year olds and mainly of the male gender.

Stereotypical Fan
Our horror film will be aimed primarily at working class men from ages 18 to 40. We chose this demographic since our horror film will heavily feature gore and action which is more suited to males, and we are assuming the film would be rated 18 plus. From our horror sub genre analysis we found that E, D, C2 and C1 were most interested in the sub genre of horror that we chose.
People most interested in our horror film would be mainstreamers, reformers and outsiders. These are the psychographic classifications that would be most interested in a horror film. A stereotypical fan's favourite films would typically be the saw films, because of their excessive use of gore and films like the expendables where the reason you see them are for the action rather than a storyline.

The Cabin in The Woods Film Review
Year: 2012
Type of
horror: Horror, mystery, thrillerLocation: Canada
Main Image: The main image within this poster is the cabin that the film is based around. The image is very different and suggests that the house is mysterious and possibly haunted. Another point is that the house is floating; this also backs up my previous point.
The setting is clearly in the woods based on the title and
the fact that that there are trees surrounding the house. The woods have been
represented in a certain way and shown to have a tall, overlooking presence;
this is also the case for the house.
Colours: The
image looks very dark and has no use of colour throughout the whole poster; the
woods shown in the distance are slightly hidden by the white fog. The house
isn’t however hidden by the fog which essentially makes it stand out and gives
it a sense of power.Fonts: The title for the film matches the films setting based on the font that is used; also throughout the title there are a range of text sizing which highlights the main two words ‘Cabin’ and ‘Woods’. The only other piece of text that is represented in a larger font is the date for the film.
Tag / Selling Line: ‘You think you know the story’ I believe this has been used to reassure people that what is shown in this poster isn’t the full story and that there will be unexpected elements within the film. This is a good selling line as people will want to find out the hidden storyline.
Target
Audience: I think that the main target audience age for this film is
15-30. I say this because the characters within the film fit into this age
group.
Friday the 13th Film Review
Year: 2009
Type of
horror: Horror
Location: USAMain Image: The main image within this poster is what looks like the killer for this film; the position he is standing in has some power to it as it looks as though he is looking down at you. He is seen as a threat mainly because he has his weapon of choice in his right hand and he is wearing a mask to hide his identity.
The setting is dark with tall trees in the background; there is a little gap of light behind the killer which gives you a small sense of hope.
Colours: The whole picture is a mix of dark blue, grey and black colours which gives it a dark feel. The title and the date for the film is the only bright colour on the whole poster. Red has been used as it often relates to danger so it fits in with the films structure. The writing at the bottom of the page is in white so that it stands out on the dark background.
Fonts: The title is really eye-catching as the font and colour used both contrast well and relate to the film; ‘Friday’ and ‘13’ are presented in a larger font as most people know that this day and date are usually perceived as unlucky. All of the other pieces of text have a simple font that makes it easier to read.
Tag / Selling Line: ‘Welcome to crystal lake’ has been used to almost inform everyone that this location is dark and unwelcome. ‘From the producers of the Texas chainsaw massacre’ has also been used to bring the audience from that film so they will think that this film is also going to be good.
Target Audience: The target audience for this film would be mostly male but also people who enjoyed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In terms of an age group I would say the majority of people would be somewhere between the ages of 18-35.
Poltergeist Film Review
Year: 1982
Type of
horror: Horror
Location: USA
Main Image:
The main image within this poster is of a young child which suggests
that she is linked to the storyline. The television within this image has also
been used to show that it is a main prop and may relate to the girl as well as
the storyline. Another point is that there is a teddy bear placed on the floor
which gives the girl a sense of innocence.
In terms of the setting you would think that it is set
inside a house but the background is dark so you can only see the floor.Colours: This poster features no use of colour throughout the whole image which gives it a dark and mysterious feel. The television is placed in the centre of the image which gives it power; also the fact that the girl has her hands placed onto the screen makes you want to find out why she is doing this.
Fonts: The
title is bold and presented with a large font that makes it eye-catching; the
other pieces of text on this page are relatively smaller than the title but
have a different font which also makes them stand out.
Tag /
Selling Line: “They’re here.” This suggests that that there is an
unwanted presence to the storyline that is when it is considered as a negative
piece of speech. ‘It knows what scares you.’ This backs up my previous point
and lets you know some of the storyline.Target Audience: The target audience for this film would be predominantly male mainly because horror films sway towards the male gender. In terms of an age range I would say that this film would be aimed at 15-35 year olds.

DOTD 1979 Image Analysis Page 3
I decided to use this shot mainly due to the fact that it
gives you an indication of the ‘auteur’ style for this film. I think that this
shot has definitely been exaggerated and it is presented with a close up shot
to emphasise this.
Some people may find this uncomfortable to watch and that is what the ‘auteur’ has probably tried to achieve with his mise-en-scene. The ‘gore’ is quite explicit but also slightly un-realistic; the shot is also presented in low-key lighting which also creates tension.

DOTD 1979 Image Analysis Page 2
This shot gives you an indication of the setting and the
extent of the zombies surrounding the characters. I think that the angle of the
shot is also important as it shows a sense of power mainly due to the camera
looking down at the zombies. I think that how wide the shot is also has been
used to emphasise how many zombies are within the mall itself.
This shot gives you an indication of the size of the mall;
with that in mind it shows the sheer mass of zombies which essentially makes
the mall space look not so safe. The zombies are also heading in one direction
which suggests that they are going towards somebody.
The identity of the zombies is also unknown due to the distance of the shot which gives them some form of power.
DOTD 1979 Image Analysis Page 1
This image is a really effective shot mainly because it
affects the audience in different ways. Some people may shudder when watching
this scene and I think that is what the ‘Auteur’ has tried to accomplish. The
shot can be considered as a medium shot and has been taken at this distance
mainly so that the head explosion fits within the shot.
I think that the extent of this shot has been exaggerated as
it follows the context of the rest of the film and it is the ‘auteur’ style of
filmmaking. The lighting within this shot also emphasises the bright red
blood used for the head explosion.
DOTD 2004 Image Analysis Page 3
I really like this shot mainly because of the angle that it
is shot at. I like the fact that the angle is a wide shot, showing the
surroundings and a large amount of zombies coming towards the camera.
The phallic weapon used connotes power towards the zombies;
this gives the characters a sense of hope as well mainly because the weapon is
their saviour.
The over the shoulder shot connotes power as well because it
makes you feel that you are being protected as you feel as though you are
standing behind the character Michael.
DOTD 2004 Image Analysis Page 2
This image connotes power mainly due to the fact that the
American flag covers the right hand side of the shot. I believe that this is
also relating to the 9/11 bombings mainly because it is suggesting that America
as a country is strong and it symbolises freedom. Within this scene they are
escaping from the zombie apocalypse on a boat which also relates to the flag.
Another thing that is also powerful from this scene is the
fact that there are mixed raced characters together helping one another
suggesting that America is even stronger as a nation and that it can overcome
what has happened.DOTD 2004 Image Analysis Page 1
I think that this image is one of the most important aspects
of the film mainly due to the fact that it has a good meaning. Being released
just 3 years after the 9/11 bombings the reasoning behind the virus was
supposedly caused by people from the Middle East. The angle of the shot also
shows power over the people which may also relate to religion.
Basically this whole image relates to religion; there is
music playing in the background “Johnny Cash – The man comes around” which
gives a large indication as to what the film director is trying to say about
this topic.
Psycho Image Analysis Page 3
This shot of the Bates Motel from Psycho gives you an
indication of how the setting is dark and quite creepy looking. Your eyes seem
to draw towards the house in the top left corner mainly because of the bright
lighting coming from the windows.
The house to the top left of the image is also looking down
at the Motel and Marion connoting misery and giving it power. The rain also
adds to the atmosphere also adding to the misery through the use of pathetic
fallacy. How dark the image is also follows Hitchcocks style of mise-en-scene and cinematography; as a whole it sets the unsettling theme and makes the image more mysterious.
Psycho Image Analysis Page 2
I feel that this shot is one of the best shots throughout the whole film mainly due to the angle. This shot has a good sense of power as it is overlooking the killer (Norman) and the victim (Arbogast). Another effective point is that because the angle of the shot is so high you are unable to tell if the killer is Norman or not.
The low-key lighting also adds to the unsettling atmosphere
by leaving the audience feeling uneasy as to what will happen next. The
“phallic weapon” is also the brightest object within the shot which also
represents a sense of power.
The position of Arbogast above the stairs makes the audience
feel shocked mainly because they can probably guess what is going to happen.Psycho Image Analysis Page 1
This photo is from the shower scene and I would say that this
is probably the most important scene throughout the whole film. This image is
effective mainly due to the fact that the “killer” has power; the angle of the
shot shows this because it is a close up with a “phallic weapon” raised above
the camera.
The shower water is running which could connote misery through
the use of pathetic fallacy; this shot also dark as well, especially Norman.
This low-key lighting gives the audience a sense of shock which could also
relate to “power”.
This image is an example of how Hitchcock uses his auteur
style to create a powerful effect on the viewer by using mise-en-scene and cinematography.
