Psycho Image Analysis Page 2


I feel that this shot is one of the best shots throughout the whole film mainly due to the angle. This shot has a good sense of power as it is overlooking the killer (Norman) and the victim (Arbogast). Another effective point is that because the angle of the shot is so high you are unable to tell if the killer is Norman or not.

The low-key lighting also adds to the unsettling atmosphere by leaving the audience feeling uneasy as to what will happen next. The “phallic weapon” is also the brightest object within the shot which also represents a sense of power.
The position of Arbogast above the stairs makes the audience feel shocked mainly because they can probably guess what is going to happen.
