This shot of the Bates Motel from Psycho gives you an
indication of how the setting is dark and quite creepy looking. Your eyes seem
to draw towards the house in the top left corner mainly because of the bright
lighting coming from the windows.
The house to the top left of the image is also looking down
at the Motel and Marion connoting misery and giving it power. The rain also
adds to the atmosphere also adding to the misery through the use of pathetic
fallacy. How dark the image is also follows Hitchcocks style of mise-en-scene and cinematography; as a whole it sets the unsettling theme and makes the image more mysterious.
